Biafra Day: Gunmen invade Anambra schools, chase pupils

There is pandemonium as gunmen invaded schools in Onitsha and some parts of the Idemili area of Anambra State, chasing students out of the classrooms. The gunmen were said to also invade markets and public places to chase people away. It was gathered that the gunmen claimed that people should go home saying today is “Biafra Day”. Every May 30 is set aside yearly to celebrate Biafra Day but this year’s edition coincided with the Monday sit-at-home which was observed yesterday. Already, there were fears among the people earlier in the day about whether to go out or not and some of the people who stepped out have started returning to their various houses, AIA News gathered. It was also gathered that there are heavy shootings between security agencies and the gunmen in the Idemili area. The police spokesman in the state, Tochukwu Ikenga, did not take his calls for confirmation as students and some traders have returned home.

Man docked for alleged possession of the human skull

A 38-year-old man, Ebuka Enuma, was on Tuesday docked in a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ court in Lagos for alleged possession of a human skull. Enuma, who resides in the Bariga area of Lagos, is charged with unlawful possession of human part. He pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Prosecution Counsel, ASP Rita Momah, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 13, at Amukoko cemetery, Lagos. Momah alleged that the defendant broke into the cemetery and excavated an old grave and stole the skull. She said that the defendant was arrested while trying to leave the cemetery. The offence, she said, contravenes the provisions of Section 238 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised). The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 238 stipulates a 14 year jail term for unlawful possession of human part. Rochas Okorocha gets N500m bail, may attend APC screening

Senator Rochas Okorocha, former Governor of Imo State, has been granted bail at N500million by the Federal High Court in Abuja. Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a ruling on Tuesday, said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) did not show enough proof why Okorocha should be permanently detained. The judge, then, ordered Okorocha to provide a surety, who will sign and of the same amount. With this development, Okorocha now has less than 24 hours to perfect the bail in order to be able to attend the presidential screening of the All Progressives Congress. Okorocha, who is facing a 17-count charge bordering on conspiracy to steal N2.9 billion in public funds during his tenure as Imo State Governor, is number 17 on the list of presidential aspirants expected by the APC screening committee. Twelve presidential aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were on Monday screened by the party’s Screening Committee led by former National Chairman, John Oyegun. The screening exercise is scheduled for two days, Monday and Tuesday, at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja. The National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Adamu, had earlier inaugurated the committee. Following the inauguration, the panel screened the aspirants one after the other. BREAKING: Niger PDP Delegates Killed By Bandits

The Chairman of the Electoral Committee and Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo announced this at the State PDP Secretariat, venue of the primaries in Minna. Delegates were said to have been killed on Wednesday while returning to Mariga after the party postponed the primaries due to a protest by some of the aspirants who expressed distrust with the delegates list. Delegates were thereafter asked to bring their means of identification to authenticate their names and primaries shifted to Thursday. Those who lost their lives in the incident were substituted to complete the number of delegates from the local government.
